2011-2012 Recap: Sonya Kovalevsky Day

I have always been impressed by the manner with which the graduate students in the Department of Mathematics are eager to participate in outreach activities and share their enthusiasm for mathematics.

This year’s UNC Sonya Kovalevsky Day on May 5th was another wonderful example in this tradition. Organized by the department’s chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), and funded by an award they obtained from the national organization, over 70 people attended this event in Phillips Hall, consisting of fun workshops, talks, and problem solving competitions for middle/high school girls and their teachers and parents. Special congratulations to our AWM chapter President, Rachel Bayless, for working to obtain the funding for this event, and thank you to all of the graduate students who contributed to this day.
