Jim Damon named Simons Fellow

[photo]Prof. James Damon (“Jim”) has been doubly honored with support for off-campus activities in 2012-13. Damon has been named to the first round of Simons Fellows in Mathematics, which “provide funds to faculty for up to a semester long research leave from classroom teaching and administrative obligations. Such leaves can increase creativity and provide intellectual stimulation.”¬†Damon will then couple this award to a semester funded by a “Senior Faculty Research and Scholarly Leave” from the Provost’s Office at UNC.

The Simons Foundation is a private foundation incorporated by Jim and Marilyn Simons with the mission “to advance the frontiers of research in mathematics and the basic sciences,” sponsoring “programs that aim to promote a deeper understanding of our world.”

We will miss seeing Jim around the Department this year, but we are excited for the opportunities that these two awards provide to him this year, and we look forward to seeing him again back in Chapel Hill next year. Congratulations to Jim.
