3rd Annual NC Math Competition

For the third consecutive year, the Department of Mathematics at Carolina hosted the State Finals of the North Carolina Math Competition for students in grades 3-8. After competing in local competitions earlier in the month, the top 20 participants in each grade level across the state were invited to participate in the competition held in Chapman Hall this past Sunday, October 21st.

Department Chair Peter Mucha, pictured here with the day’s mascot, talked with parents before giving brief introductions at the awards ceremony.

It was a beautiful day for the event, with participants and their families enjoying the space both in and outside Chapman Hall. The NCMC webpage has a carousel of photos that those familiar with the space will recognize as Phillips and Chapman Halls.

An important part of the success of this event was the participation and effort put in by over a dozen Carolina graduate and undergraduate students, who helped proctor and grade the competition’s examinations. Thank you to all who put in this effort.

Congratulations to the students in the competition. We hope to see your applications to study in Chapel Hill in the coming years!
